The official website for the anime adaptation of Rihito Takarai's Ten Count manga announced on Friday that production of the anime has been canceled.

In a statement on the official website and X (formerly Twitter), the production committee cites production circumstances as the reason that led to the cancellation of the anime. The official website and X will be closed on March 31.

Originally announced in March 2018, the anime was scheduled to air on television in 2020. Later that year, however, the production committee stated that the broadcast will be postponed as the staff reconsiders the development format. The anime was reformatted as a movie in October 2022 with a 2023 premiere, but was not released.

Sou Toyama (Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin episode director) was directing and penning the anime at East Fish Studio and SynergySP. Tomomi Shimazaki (Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou) was the character designer. Production company Pony Canyon was in charge of distribution.

Voice actors Shinnosuke Tachibana (Sekaiichi Hatsukoi) and Tomoaki Maeno (Hitorijime My Hero) were reprising their roles from the drama CD as Tadaomi Shirotani and Riku Kurose, respectively.

Takarai serialized the boys love drama manga in Dear+ magazine between July 2013 and November 2017. Shinshokan published the sixth and final volume in March 2018. VIZ Media licensed the manga under its SuBLime imprint in English in 2015 and released the sixth and final volume in December 2018.

Unfortunately, this was expected after the production committee delayed the release twice due to their own incompetence. Hopefully some other people will eventually attempt to adapt this. What else have we lost? The Yuri!! On Ice movie and the Tokyo Babylon 2021 series (although if this gets taken away from Studio GoHands, I’d be elated).

@Multilynx Was the Yuri and Victor movie finally cancelled? It seems like I saw questions about the release date a couple of years ago, but then the discussions seemed to stop.

@RobertBobert Essentilly, yes. MAPPA’s CEO made comments in July 2023 basically saying that Yuri doesn’t make them much money and they need big hits to grow (yet look how poorly they treated their animators for Jujutsu Kaisen S2). Here’s a link about it: https://in.ign.com/yuri-on-ice/189261/news/yuri-on-ice-film-fans-hopes-dwindle-after-mappa-ceos-comments#:~:text=%E2%80%9CTake%2C%20for%20instance%2C%20Yuri,we%20also%20have%20a%20responsibility.

@Multilynx Didn't make much money? But it was one of the main hits of the second half of the 10s. Or has their new dark fantasy line made them so much money that Yuri no longer looks like such a promising banger in comparison?

MAPPA’s CEO feeling disappointed by the success of the anime has nothing to do with the rumours of how he treats his animators . What are you talking about ?

@RobertBobert Whoever was in charge at the time probably didn’t have enough experience with production committee contracts since they were founded in 2011, so even though Yuri was wildly successful, MAPPA made very little profit from it as I believe they were close to the bottom of the list to receive payments.

It was definitely a learning experience for them. I wish they’d treat the fans better by making the movie they already announced. Maybe they will in 10-20 years after they’ve had some successes growth?

It's very rare for project to be cancelled after it being announced.
But it's not like BL fans will be starving anyway, because there were quite a few of other announcements of BL manga being adapted.

@Multilynx Well, as I understand you, they didn't cancel the film so much as postpone it indefinitely. Or not?

@Yubisoft What are you talking about? I said that MAPPA’s CEO wants big profits and growth yet treats the animators who work on the titles that can be big profit drivers like trash. Hence the “they need big hits to grow (yet look how poorly they treated their animators for Jujutsu Kaisen S2)”.

They are not rumors, they are facts. Or did you not read about the entire hoopla last year with the many different animators coming forward about the working conditions at MAPPA?

If you want to believe whatever you see on the internet as ''facts'' without confirming it yourself with verified source and not random posts on X it's your choice , doesn't mean everyone will do the same . But this is not the place to debate this . I just pointed that your mindset is wrong due to your overflowing hate for the MAPPA CEO

@Yubisoft Only ignorant people believe whatever they see on the internet as “facts”. I have confirmed this personally but I cannot say more than that. I don’t use social media (just this website). And I have no hatred of the man, so I’m surprised you chose that word over a sentence or two of my criticism of him. Thanks for the engagement. I appreciate it.

Not surprised — since it seemed like SynergySP was the production site and they’ve never mentioned anything about Ten Count on their website. SynergySP has also since moved away from mainly gross-contracting after Ryota’s (former board director at TMS/Telecom) appointment as representative director in 2022.

@Absurdo_N That's why I'm treating the current 3 (wow...) bl anime that are airing/to be aired in a few months like treasure ;-; I mean, I already knew live actions are a big thing in japan and bl manga mostly either receive a cd drama or live action, but this reads like such a shame. Live actions are cheaper to produce and good for those who like them or prefer them to other media but still...

Homophobia is not an explanation for all the things related to the cancellation of an anime, it involves many things.

@Absurdo_N a heterosexual shounen anime adaptation would never get cancelled. It would at least have 1 season. This has to be homophobia towards BL. Japan is fine with GL but not BL because the industry is still very male dominated.

@Old_School_Akira bl anime has been around forever. Even if it isn't as popular. There still is a market for it. So saying homophobia stopped its production is just wrong. Did yall even read the article?

@Old_School_Akira Shonens is a pretty flimsy example, considering the huge BL fandom of each such show (hell, even on MAL every all-male shonen is included in at least 2-3 BL stacks) and how studios openly take advantage of it. This is like citing Manga Time Kirara's CGDCT as an example of discrimination against yuri.

@Old_School_Akira Out of curiosity I checked out the tags for this manga on baka-updates and found the following:

  • Dubious Consent
  • Emotional Manipulation
  • Manipulative Lover
  • Manipulative Male Lead
  • Manipulative Seme
  • Pervert/s
  • Rape
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Sexual Assault
  • Sexual Coercion
  • Toxic Relationship
  • Twisted Romance

So if just like you said that homophobia is the reason that this got cancelled then it would be safe to assume that gay people support the above mentioned points?

Always the same… Every age, every generation.
